I began experiencing some mild symptoms of Repetitive Strain Injury when I was in a job that involved using a laptop a lot. However I recovered completely when the job ended because I didn’t need to use a computer at all for a long time. The problem came back a few years later with a combination of change of body use and incorrect posture and other factors such as using a kneeling chair. Seeking ways to deal with the RSI led to a cascade of other injuries due to a combination of overuse, misdiagnosis by physiotherapists and inadequate rest because of worries about accruing sick leave. Some of these injuries have been successfully treated by surgery, others are ongoing. In hindsight, I believe that all of them were preventable.
